Making his eighth quarter-final appearance at Memphis, Roddick collected 11 aces, while the eighth-seeded Querrey powered 15 aces but also double faulted four times.

In the next round he will face former world number 1 Lleyton Hewitt, who cruised to a 6-2 6-3 victory over Belgium’s Christophe Rochus.

On the other side of the draw, second-seeded Argentinian Juan Martin del Potro was upset by number Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic 7-6 (9/7) 6-4.

Stepanek, who is already seeking his third title of the year, overcame committing six double faults by blasting 11 aces and saving five of six break points. He also won 79 percent of his first-serve points.

The 30-year-old Stepanek will now take on Israeli qualifier Dudi Sela, who fought back for a 4-6 6-4 6-2 triumph over unseeded Russian Igor Kunitsyn.
