Roddick a doubt for Roland Garros

Andy Roddick has admitted his recent shoulder problems may scupper his chances of being fully fit for Roland Garros, which starts on Sunday.

The 28-year-old had to withdraw hours ahead of the doubles final at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia as a result of the problem last weekend, handing victory to countrymen Sam Querrey and John Isner in Rome.

And now the former world No.1 has pulled out of the ATP Nice Open this week and faces a race against time to be fit for the second Grand Slam of the year.

“I don’t know yet if I will be able to play at Roland Garros and I think that you cant play a Grand Slam if you’re not 100 percent,” said Roddick.

The American, who has never progressed beyond round four at Roland Garros, is keen to avoid aggravating the injury to the extent where he might jeopardise his chances of playing at Wimbledon.

“It is painful more when I am hitting backhands and forehands than when I am serving, and there is a little bit of tendinitis,” admitted Roddick.

“I want to avoid spending months out injured. It has not been a very good year so far.”
