Robson, who reached her first WTA tour final in Guangzhou last year, admitted she made too many errors as she fell 1-6 7-6(6) 6-2 to former Wimbledon semi-finalist Jie Zheng in the quarter-final in China.

"I made a lot of mistakes on my return, which gave her a lot of easy points," said Robson, who won more points than she lost in the defeat. "But overall, I think she just played better than me."

Fellow seeds Alize Cornet and Monica Puig fell to Yvonne Meusburger and Vania King respectively creating a semi-final without any seeds for the first time this season.

Fellow Brit Johanna Konta also fell at the quarter-final stage, losing to wild card Zhang Shuai 7-5 6-3.

Zhang will now face Meusburger in the semi-final after the 29-year-old Austrian defeated No.2 seed Alize Cornet while Zheng will take on King, who recovered from 6-1 5-2 down to beat Monica Puig in a third-set tiebreak.
