British No.1 Laura Robson claimed her fourth win against a top-ten opponent as she upset No.10 seed Maria Kirilenko to reach the second round. "I think I go out against the top players with nothing to lose, and I've always been like that,” she said.

Bernard Tomic dug deep to defeat Sam Querrey 7-6(6) 7-6(3) 3-6 2-6 6-3 after suffering a bout of dizziness midway through the match. The Australian will face veteran James Blake in the second round.

There was no such trouble for Tomic's fellow Australian Sam Stosur, who powered into the second round with a 6-1 6-3 victory over Slovakian teenager Anna Schmiedlova. The No.14 seed, who has never made it past the third round at Wimbledon, described the win as one of her best performances on grass. "That's obviously a good feeling," she said. "Yeah, hopefully a good sign."

After back-to-back defeats in Halle and Eastbourne, Milos Raonic claimed his first win on grass this season with a 6-4 6-3 6-3 victory over Carlos Berlocq."My game feels a lot better than last week," Raonic said. "We worked on a lot of things. Also, this is a grand slam and you bite down harder."

One of the ball girls felt the force of Raonic's power as she was struck in the arm by an errant 206kph serve.

France's Mathilde Johansson parted company with her racket but it did not stop her beating Timea Babos 4-6 6-1 6-3.
