Robson, who reached the final at the tournament last year, defeated the 15-year-old Russian 6-2 3-6 6-2 in one hour an 40 minutes.

Robson will play Romania’s Cristina Dinu in the next round on Wednesday.

The 16-year-old will also play in the quarter-finals of the women’s doubles on Wednesday alongside Australia’s Sally Peers.

The pair only teamed on the eve of the tournament after Peers’ original partner, Isabella Holland, withdrew due to injury.

They will play 15th seeds Agnieszka Radwanska and Maria Kirilenko on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, there was also success for Great Britain’s number one boys player Oliver Golding, who came from a set down to beat Ireland’s Sam Barry 7-6 (10/8) 6-3 6-4.

Golding will play Australian wildcard James Duckworth in the third round.
