Robson breezed into the second round with a comprehensive victory over Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur, while 11th seed Watson saw off Russia’s Ksenia Kirillova in three sets.

Former Wimbledon junior champion Robson, 15, beat the 16-year-old Jabeur 6-0 6-1 at Flushing Meadows, eight days after losing a deciding-set tie-breaker in her final qualifying round match for the women’s singles main draw.

The unseeded Robson bounced back in style with a 43-minute demolition in which she allowed only one break of serve and will now face either seventh seeded American Lauren Embree or qualifier Paula Kania of Poland.

Watson, 17, will await the winner of the match between Romania’s Cristina Dinu and American qualifier Courtney Dolehide, after a 6-2 7-6 (7-5) 6-1 victory over Kirillova.

A third British girl, Stephanie Cornish, is also in New York and will begin her junior campaign against Russia’s Yana Buchina.
