The 15-year-old Robson was attempting to reach just her second grand slam, but was beaten in straight sets by her Dutch opponent 6-4 7-6 (9/7).

It was always going to be a tough task for the 406th-ranked Robson against her 20-year-old opponent who reached a career-high ranking of 30 in February 2008 and who reached the third round at Melbourne Park in 2006.

After losing the opening set Robson showed resolve to break Krajicek’s serve and force a second-set tie-break.

The teen then fended off two match points in the decider before her resistence was eventually broken.

Robson beat a top-30 player for the first time in her career at the Hopman Cup last week when she defeated Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez in straight sets to raise expectations the teenager could qualify for a place in a grand slam for the first time.

Robson was handed a wildcard entry into Wimbledon last year, when she took Daniela Hantuchova to three sets in the first round, before failing to qualify for the US Open at the last hurdle.

The Melbourne-born left hander, who will turn 16 next week, will stay in Australia to compete in the women’s junior event where she is one of the favourites.
