The British No.1 produced an impressive display of grass-court tennis, firing down 31 winners on her way to a 6-3 6-4 victory over Kirilenko, who hit only four unforced errors during the 78-minute encounter.

The win marked Robson’s fourth victory over top ten opposition – her previous three coming against Agnieszka Radwanska, Petra Kvitova and Li Na – and the world No.38 admitted afterwards that she got slightly anxious towards the end.

“I think it was a big [win] for me because although I really like grass and I seem to play well on it, I've never actually done overly well here,” said Robson, who is working with Andy Murray's former coach Miles Maclagan during the grass-court season. “I've only made the second round once. I think it was good that I managed to tough it out after I got so nervous in the second set. And, yeah, I'm happy.

“I think I go out against the top players with nothing to lose, and, you know, I've always been like that,” she added. “In the past I've started out well in the first couple of games of the first set and then just not been able to hold on to that lead.

“I've been really happy with my progress [in] the last couple months with that and just being able to tough out wins.”

Next up for Robson is Colombian world No.117 Mariana Duque-Marino, who upset Julia Goerges in three, tight sets in her opening match.

“She’s tough for sure,” Robson said of her next opponent. “She’s pretty consistent. I think she’s got quite a nasty little slice. So, yeah, it’s going to be a tough match.”
