“Obviously the world number one (Rafael Nadal) is the favourite but (Andy) Murray is playing great, I don’t think anyone can say (Roger) Federer has no chance, (Novak) Djokovic is there again (as is Andy) Roddick,” said Robredo, who overcame Jurgen Melzer 6-3 6-4 in Sydney.

“There is always great names so we will see who is in the best shape. Hopefully I can go far. That’s why I’m here. Hopefully I can be the surprise (at the Australian Open) – it would be a nice present.”

The seventh seed will next face Mario Ancic, who defeated Belgian Xavier Malisse 4-6 7-6 (7/5) 6-3.

Fifth seed Igor Andreev defeated Frank Dancevic 7-6 (7/2) 6-3, while Michael Llodra breezed past Denis Gremelmayr 6-0 6-2 and Jarkko Nieminen overcame Feliciano Lopez in straight sets.
