Regaining top spot possible, says Caro

Caroline Wozniacki has slipped to No.6 in the world rankings, but the 21-year-old Dane has no intention of changing the game style that took her to the top. “You shouldn’t repair something that isn’t broken and I’ve reached great success with the way I’m playing,” Wozniacki said.
 
Having lost the No.1 position by going out in the Australian Open quarter-finals in January, Wozniacki fell further behind the leading players when she was beaten last week by Ana Ivanovic in the fourth round at Indian Wells, where she was champion last year. The current Sony Ericsson Open in Miami offers a chance to start climbing back up the ladder, although Wozniacki could face a tricky match in the fourth round against Julia Goerges, who beat her in Dubai last month.
 
What does Wozniacki make of those critics who say she needs to develop a more attacking style? “I just let it go,” she said. “Obviously you want to build on your game all the time, but you don’t want to get away from the style you’re playing, because I’ve been playing the way I have since I started. It comes naturally to you.
 
“Everyone has their own game. The top players have success with their own game and they need to build on that and not change it. Because if you asked [Petra] Kvitova to start playing spin like [Francesca] Schiavone and start running there would be no chance. Or if you asked Schiavone to play like Kvitova that wouldn’t work either. So everyone just needs to build on their own game.”
 
Asked how hard it would be to regain the No.1 spot, Wozniacki said: “I don’t think it’s going to be easy, but I believe that it’s possible. We are a lot of young players, playing very well at the moment. I think the generations are changing a little bit as well. The older players are playing less or getting a bit injured and you see the young ones, the hungry ones, coming up. So I think it’s exciting times and I definitely believe it’s possible for me to be No 1 again.”
