Bulgarian Pironkova, seeded eighth, started well enough against Roberta Vinci of Italy, taking the first set on a tie-breaker.

However, Vinci battled back to progress to the second round with a 6-7 (4/7) 6-2 6-4 win.

Seventh seed Sorana Cirstea had no such problems as she beat fellow Romanian Ioana Raluca Olaru 6-4 6-2, while Nicole Vaidisova came from behind to beat Angelique Kerber 3-6 6-4 6-4.
