Petra Kvitova labels Wimbledon scheduling ‘annoying’

Petra Kvitova has commented on Wimbledon’s ‘depressing’ scheduling this year, after The Championships were thrown into disarray following heavy rain.

Kvitova is a two-time champion at SW19, following triumphs in 2011 and 2014, and is coming into the grass major in good form once again.

The Czech won the WTA 500 tournament in Berlin to lift her 31st career title, and her sixth on grass.

However, due to rain halting play on numerous occasions throughout the first three days of Wimbledon, Kvitova only got to play her first round match against Jasmine Paolini on Wednesday.

The first round of the singles events were only officially completed on Thursday afternoon, and Kvitova revealed that there have been discussions about the situation between players in the locker room.

“We talked in the locker room. We don’t get it,” said Kvitova. “[Daria] Kasatkina and [Iga] Swiatek are in round three and some haven’t finished round one. I don’t think the organisers quite managed it. They should put round one players on Centre Court. It’s depressing to wait two days to play. It can happen at Wimbledon, but it’s annoying.”

Due to being scheduled onto Centre Court and Court No.1 that both have roofs, the likes of Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner, and the aforementioned Swiatek and Kasatkina have managed to get ahead of the rest of the competition.

Kvitova will continue playing catch-up this morning against Aliaksandra Sasnovich on the roofless Court No.2, but with better weather forecasted the 33-year-old should be able to complete her second round match without interruptions.

Being one of only three former champions in the Wimbledon Ladies singles draw, Kvitova has been spoken about as one of the favourites to lift the Venus Rosewater Dish in 2023.
