Second seed Patty Schnyder, who last won in Palermo 11 years ago, also looked impressive in a 6-4 6-0 first-round win over Russian teenager Anastasia Pivovarova.

The winning run of Spain’s Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, who surprised Caroline Wozniacki to win the title in Bastad last week, ended in a 6-2 6-3 defeat to home favourite Tathiana Garbin.

There were also second round wins for seventh seed Aravane Rezai, who came from behind to beat Varvara Lepchenko 6-7 (2/7) 6-4 6-2, and Olga Govortsova, who surprised sixth seed Ekaterina Makarova 6-2 6-2.
