Peer-less Shahar waltzes through

Second seed Peer, 22, dominated their second-round tussle and beat the Australian 6-2 6-2.

The result was hardly the ideal preparation for Dokic ahead of the Australian Open, where she reached the quarter-finals last year. This time Dokic will have plenty of ranking points to defend at Melbourne Park.

There was more Australian disappointment as Dokic’s fellow former top-10 player Alicia Molik crashed out to fifth seed Carla Suarez Navarro.

Molik and Dokic would have met in the quarter-finals had they both won, however it was not to be.

Wild-card entry Molik put up a decent fight against Spaniard Navarro but eventually lost 7-6 (7/3) 3-6 6-3.

Third-seeded Ukrainian Kateryna Bondarenko was also eliminated, beaten 7-6 (10/8) 6-4 by Italian Sara Errani, while Belgian qualifier Kirsten Flipkens accounted for Canadian sixth seed Aleksandra Wozniak, achieving a fine 7-5 6-2 win.
