‘Page should be turned’ – Alexander Zverev tantrum forgiven by Mexican tournament chief

After lashing out and being ejected from the Mexican Open, tournament president Raul Zurutuza said Alexander Zverev needs to “face the consequences of his actions” but wants the situation to be over.

World number three Alexander Zverev was ejected from the Mexican Open after he swung his racket a total of four times at the chair umpire’s stand. in a doubles tie Zverev’s second swing almost connected with the chair umpire’s foot if not for a narrow miss.

This was the height of the frustrations as tensions had been building throughout the game when he launched an expletive rant towards a line judge.

Whilst Zverev apologised via a lengthy social media post, he was subsequently booted from the tournament and received a $40,000 (£30,000) fine, as well as receiving no prize money and no rankings points.

There is also the possibility that Zverev could receive further punishments as the ATP have announced they will review the incident further.

This comes after a disappointing Australian Open campaign where he lost in straight sets to World number 12 Denis Shapovalov in the fourth round.

Speaking to Argentinian news website Infobae, tournament president Raul Zurutuza said “like everything in life, you have to accept the consequences of your actions.

“Sasha [Zverev] he is very sad about that reaction and well, we simply [want to tell him] that we are very sorry that this has happened and we reiterate that this is your home.

“He is the defending champion of the tournament. He has been incredibly supportive of the tournament ever since he started his career.

“Now it’s our turn to support him too, I believe that the page should be turned.”
