O’Brien was bidding to become the first British female to make the second round at Roland Garros since Clare Wood achieved the feat in 1994.

But the 23-year-old from Yorkshire never had a look in as she was defeated 6-1 6-1 on Court 14.

That same court had earlier witnessed the demise of fellow Briton Melanie South at the hands of 16-year-old Portuguese qualifier Michelle Larcher De Brito, who claimed a 0-6 7-6 (7/5) 7-5 win.

British number one Anne Keothavong was also eliminated when she was thrashed 6-0 6-0 by top seed Dinara Safina.
