Novak Djokovic ramps up Wimbledon preparation with first grass court practise
World No.1 and favourite to lift the Wimbledon men’s singles trophy, Novak Djokovic, has stepped up his preparations by hitting the grass courts after a lengthy rest
Novak Djokovic can be seen practising on a grass court for the first time in 2019 as he aims to win yet another Grand Slam title at this year’s Wimbledon.
Djokovic has been back in his homeland of Serbia training on hard courts and enjoying his iconic status in the country of his birth, but this week with Wimbledon starting next Monday, he’s arrived in the UK and has immediately found a grass court to get his game in shape.
He’s due to play in the Boodles exhibition tournament and the video posted by the Boodles organisers shows him serving on one of their grass courts in an empty stadium.
Djokovic had already explained that he was too tired to play in any of the pre-Wimbledon warm up tournamwnts such as Queen’s or Halle but instead opted for an intense training camp in Belgrade with his team.
Djokovic is looking to defend his title at Wimbledon which he’s done once before back in 2015. Djokovic’s record on grass is in fact one of his best with a win ratio of an astonishing 83% making grass his second best surface, closely behind hard courts where his win ratio is slightly higher at 84%.
Djokovic explained that last year he played at Queen’s because he’d had a lengthy injury lay off earlier that year and had the time to play more on grass.
“This year, because of the long season on gravel (clay), I decided to skip it and focus solely on Wimbledon. I am currently on top of the world rankings, and having in mind that I am defending last year’s Wimbledon title, it is obvious I am hoping to push to the end.”
