The Russian dropped only two games against her opponent, running out a 6-2 6-0 winner to set up a second round meeting with another Frenchwoman, Severine Bremond, who defeated Anna-Lena Groenefeld.

Fifth seed Carla Suarez Navarro also made it safely through with a 6-2 6-0 triumph, cruising past wildcard and fellow Spaniard Estrella Cabeza Candela, as did last year’s losing finalist Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, overcoming Kirsten Flipkens 6-2 6-2.

The major casualty of the day was fourth-seeded Kaia Kanepi who took the opening set against qualifier Masa Zec Peskiric before being eliminated 3-6 6-2 6-4, whilst eighth seed Sorana Cirstea was also sent crashing out by a qualifier in the form of Anastasiya Yakimova.

Another qualifier through is Tatjana Malek, who will meet Alize Cornet’s conqueror Stephanie Cohen-Aloro in the next round after defeating Nuria Llagostera Vives.

There were also victories for former top-10 player Nicole Vaidisova against Yevgenia Savranska and Francesca Schiavone against Lourdes Dominguez Lino, while Emilie Loit will complete the second round draw after defeating fellow qualifier Mervana Jugic-Salkic.
