The former world No.3, who beat the world No.1 6-4 7-6(6) in his home town of Cordoba earlier in the week, fell 6-3 6-4 in front of a crowd of almost 10,000 fans in Buenos Aires. Novak Djokovic and Juan Monaco later joined the pair on court for a doubles match.

Meanwhile on Sunday, Nadal and Djokovic renewed their rivalries in the Argentinean capital before taking a well-earned break at the end of a long season. Nadal defeated Djokovic 6-4 7-5 in to avenge a defeat in Santiago earlier in the week as they marked the retirement of former Olympic gold medalist Nicolas Massu.

The pair, who also visited the Perito Moreno Glacier in Patagonia as part of their tour of South America, are due to return to action at the end of December at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship, which takes place in Abu Dhabi between December 26-28.
