Spanish superman and new world No.1 Rafael Nadal will begin his first slam as the No.1 seed against a qualifier.

The French Open, Wimbledon and Olympic champion will be bidding for his first US Open title when the final major of the year kicks off in New York on Monday.

Nadals first real test is likely to be against 14th seed Ivo Karlovic in the fourth round before a quarter-final date with either James Blake or David Nalbandian.

The second quarter of the mens draw features fourth seed David Ferrer and sixth seed Andy Murray.

The bottom half will be the talking point as it boasts second seed and defending champion Roger Federer and last years US Open runner-up Novak Djokovic they are seeded to meet in the last four.

World No.3 Djokovic will open up against tricky Frenchman Arnaud Clement and his quarter-final opponent should be eighth seed Andy Roddick.

Federer begins the defence of his title against Argentine Maximo Gonzalez and his expected quarter-final opponent is fifth seed Nikolay Davydenko.

In the womens singles, top seed and world No.1 Ana Ivanovic will play Russias Vera Dushevina in her opening match while second seed Jelena Jankovic takes on American Coco Vandeweghe.

Ivanovic has a tough quarter and will most probably be faced with in-form Russian Dinara Safina in the last eight.

The top half also boasts both Williams sisters, who are seeded to meet in the quarter-finals.

Jankovic has by far the easier half, although she will still have to get past third seed Svetlana Kuznetsova and Olympic champion Elena Dementieva if she is to reach her first grand slam final.

The action begins on Monday August 25.
