The Spaniard struggled to assert himself against the 17-year-old before prevailing 7-5 3-6 6-2 in two hours 25 minutes.

Frenchman Tsonga, the seventh seed, claimed a 7-6 (8/6) 6-2 win over Russia’s Dmitry Tursunov.

World number four Andy Murray was a 7-6 (7/4) 7-5 winner against Andreas Seppi and will next face Frenchman Marc Gicquel, who overcame compatriot Paul-Henri Mathieu 6-4 6-3.

Mario Ancic, the fourth seed, defeated Gilles Simon of France 6-4 3-6 6-3 in two hours 28 minutes to progress to a last-eight meeting with Mikhail Youzhny of Russia.

Gael Monfils ousted compatriot and defending champion Michael Llodra in straight sets, 6-4 6-4, to set up a quarter-final contest with another Frenchman, Julien Benneteau.
