Top seed Nadal will now face the winner of the last quarter-final between Ivo Karlovic and Gilles Simon as the world number one seeks his ninth title of the year.

If Nadal wins his semi-final match he will achieve his goal of ending the year as the world’s top-ranked player, although even he falls on Saturday his nearest rival, Roger Federer, needs to win every tournament remaining to pip the Mallorcan.

Madrid resident Lopez came into the match having knocked out seeded duo Stanislas Wawrinka and David Ferrer in his previous two rounds but he came unstuck against his Davis Cup team-mate Nadal, despite battling hard at the end.
