The Spaniard needed just over an hour and a half to claim a comfortable 6-3 6-0 win over Ecuadorian qualifier Nicolas Lapentti.

Ljubicic, who is based in the principality, was given a far tougher workout by Italy’s Simone Bolelli before eventually emerging a 7-5 7-6 victor.

Fourth seed Andy Murray finished off another Italian, Fabio Fognini, after their match was put on hold by the weather on Thursday night.

Resuming a game up in the second set, the Briton overcame a sluggish start to wrap up the match 7-6 (13/11) 6-4.

He can expect to be in better shape than last-eight opponent Nikolay Davydenko after the eighth seed overcame dangerous Argentinian David Nalbandian 6-4 5-7 6-3 in a two-and-a-half-hour epic.
