The world No. 3, who has struggled at the ATP Masters 1000 event in recent years, avoided a third straight defeat at Indian Wells Tennis Garden, but he needed three sets to navigate his way past world No. 83 Evgeny Donskoy.

Playing for the first time since his Australian Open final defeat to Novak Djokovic in January, Murray recovered from a sluggish start to move into the third round with a 5-7 6-2 6-2 victory.

“I have not played a match for six weeks, so you can’t expect to play your best tennis straight away,” Murray said.

“I hope I play better at each match. I haven’t played well here the last few years and I just need to get matches under my belt.”

Murray, who will now face Lu Yen-Hsun in the third round, has the chance to rise to No. 2 in the world rankings if he reaches the final this week.

To reach the final, Murray will likely have to see off world No. 1 Djokovic in the semi-finals. The Serb extended his unbeaten run to 19 matches with a 6-0 5-7 6-2 victory over Fabio Fognini in California.
