The US Open champion battled from a set down in Miami and saved match point in the decider as he claimed a 2-6 6-4 7-6(1) victory to regain the title he won in 2009.

He also moves ahead of Roger Federer in the ATP Tour rankings, back up to second for the first time since August 2009, when he spent three weeks at No.2.

Murray made a sluggish start in humid conditions in Florida, committing 19 unforced errors as he lost the opening set, but rallied to force a deciding set.

In a match featuring 14 breaks of serve, Ferrer had match point leading 6-5 in the third, but an unsuccessful HawkEye challenge saw Murray survive before clinching victory in the tiebreak after two hours and 45 minutes.

"It was such a tough match," Murray said. "It could have gone either way, both of us were struggling physically at the end. It's so tough against him. He has a great attitude, he's a great fighter. I am sure we will have more tough matches in the future."

Murray’s 26th career title was his first Masters 1000 triumph since 2011, while Ferrer is now 0-13 against top-five ranked opponents in title matches.
