Andy Murray will take on Rafael Nadal on Wednesday after both players won their opening round-robin matches at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals on Monday

Murray to meet Nadal on Wednesday

Murray is just won win away from securing the year-end No.2 ranking from Roger Federer after a 6-4 6-4 victory over David Ferrer in London.

A double fault from Ferrer gifted Murray the opening set but the Spaniard bounced back immediately, breaking Murray to love as he took a 2-0 lead in the second set. But Murray has not lost a match this season after winning the opening set, and he soon found his way back into the match, again breaking in the final game of the set to clinch the match in 90 minutes.

"It was a tough match with a lot of long rallies," said Murray. "He fought hard right to the end and made it extremely difficult. He didn't serve as well as he can and I played a bit better at the end of both sets, and that got me the win."

In the evening session Rafael Nadal defeated Stan Wawrinka 6-3 6-2 – the fourth straight sets win from the opening four singles matches at the O2 Arena.

Before the 2014 Australian Open Wawrinka had never beaten Nadal in 12 previous attempts but had won three of their past four meetings, including in Paris last week. However, 35 unforced errors proved costly for Wawrinka as the nine-time Roland Garros winner recovered from an early break to wrap up victory against the reigning French Open champion.
