Murray recovered from dropping the opening set against Richard Gasquet to claim a 6-7(3) 6-1 6-2 victory at Crandon Park.

The British No.1 will rise to world No.2 for the first time since 2009 if he lifts the trophy in Miami. Standing between Murray and the title is world No.5 David Ferrer, who ended veteran Tommy Haas’ spectacular run at the Masters 1000 event.

Haas, who dumped out top seed Novak Djokovic earlier in the week, looked to be on course for another scalp when he took the opening set, but Ferrer bounced back to seal a 4-6 6-2 6-3 win.

"He's an unbelievable competitor, a great fighter," Murray said of his next opponent. "We train a lot together, so we know each other's games well. It should be a really tough match with a lot of long rallies."

Meanwhile, another Briton will be playing for a title in Miami on Sunday as Laura Robson reached the final of the women’s doubles with Lisa Raymond after they stunned top seeds Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci 6-1 6-2 . The pair will meet Nadia Petrova and Katarina Srebotnik in the final.
