The US Open champion saved two set points at 2-5 in the opening set before rallying to claim a 7-6(3) 6-3 victory at Crandon Park.

“He was taking the ball early very aggressively and hitting very clean at the beginning of the match and I had to weather the storm a bit," Murray told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"If you don't feel like you are playing at your best, you don't go for the lines, you just try to keep a good depth and hit the ball mainly crosscourt and make your opponent have to beat you. I did that in the first set."

Next up for Murray is world No.19 Andreas Seppi, with sixth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga a potential quarter-final opponent.

The Scot can overtake Roger Federer as world No.2 if he wins in Miami this week.
