The world No.3 appeared in good spirits following the procedure, posting a picture on Twitter and thanking hospital staff for ‘putting him back together;.

"After spending two days in hospital you realise and appreciate how amazing a job carers, nurses, doctors etc do in hospitals all over the world looking after people who are in need,” Murray tweeted. “Thanks to everyone at hospital for looking after me and putting me back together again."

Murray missed the French Open with a back problem and although he returned to action in spectacular fashion in June, winning Queen’s and Wimbledon, the problem flared up once again after the US Open.

After helping Great Britain defeat Croatia to return to the Davis Cup World Group, Murray sought medical advice and decided to go under the knife to rectify the problem.

His straight sets win over Ivan Dodig in Umag looks likely to have been his final match of the season as he targets a return to action in January.
