Murray muddles on

Second seed Andy Murray was again looking tentative at the ABM AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam on Friday as he triumphed 7-6, 4-6, 3-0 over Marc Gicquel of France. Gicquel pushed Murray to the limits but was forced to retire in the third set.

The 21-year old Scot did look sharper than his previous match, taking the first set on a tie-break. However, Gicquel’s tactics of rushing to the net frequently paid dividends as he took the second set. Unfortunately, just before taking the second set the world No.55 incurred a thigh injury, allowing Murray to seize control of the match.

Murray will now face Croat Mario Ancic in the semi-final, who himself comfortably defeated Russian Mikhail Youzhny 6-4, 6-2.

24-year-old Ancic is displaying good form this season; he upset the fourth seed Gilles Simon on Thursday and last week made it to his eleventh ATP Tour final in Zagreb (losing to Marin Cilic). He will be hoping to do one better this week.

Lets hope Murray can rediscover some of his early season form that saw him beat Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal successively at the Capita World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi.
