Murray, the world number four who faces Andrei Pavel in the first round of the Australian Open, is still searching for his maiden grand slam singles title after losing to Federer at the US Open last year.

“I’m hoping that this year is going to be a little bit more competitive and there’s going to be some new guys coming through and doing well in the big tournaments,” he said.

“The US Open was a very good experience for me and hopefully if I’m in the same situation this year I’ll be better prepared.”

Nadal and Federer have faced each other in the final of seven grand slams (three Wimbledons and four French Opens) since Nadal won the French Open in 2005, including an epic final last year at SW19.
