The top seeds, who did not drop a set in the tournament, defeated last year’s winners, Henri Kontinen and Heather Watson, 6-4 6-4 in the last match of the championships on Centre Court.

Its Murray’s second mixed doubles triumph at the All England Club and Hingis has now become a 23-time major champion.

“The crowd was a bit split today,” said a delighted Murray after the match. "It’s a success for British tennis to have two players in the final and it was a great week for us. We played a lot of amazing tennis, especially in the final, and we knew we would have to play a good match if we were to have a chance to win.

“I have to say a huge thanks to Martina for playing with me because I would not be standing here if it wasn’t for her. When she texted me it was an easy decision to play as she is such an amazing player and she showed that all week.

“I’m really happy I contacted Jamie before Wimbledon started,” added Hingis. “I’m really happy with how we played and performed.”

The top seeds were the overwhelming favourites to win the final but they did not have it all their own way. The teams traded early breaks however Murray’s razor-sharp reactions in the forecourt earned his team another break in the seventh game.

That key breakthrough was all the Scot and the Swiss required to claim the opener by six games to four and move a step closer to the title.

Kontinen and Watson remained eager to cling on to their title but they slipped a break of serve behind in the seventh game – and they were unable to recover the deficit. It was another routine victory for Murray and Hingis and they may renew their partnership at the US Open later this summer.
