The Scot will move ahead of Novak Djokovic when the latest rankings are released next Monday following the Serbian’s loss to Rafael Nadal in the Internationale BNL d’Italia final on Sunday.

A statement on Murray’s official website read: “Andy will break yet more ground on 11 May, when he becomes the first British player to reach number three in the world rankings.”

It means Murray is now ranked higher than either Tim Henman and Greg Rusedski managed in their careers. Neither player could get past the number four spot.
