Andy Murray is absent from Great Britain’s squad for the upcoming Davis Cup tie against Belgium from April 6-8.

The world No.4 was not named in Leon Smith’s AEGON GB Davis Cup team for the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Euro/Africa Zone Group I tie at the Braehead Arena in Glasgow.

The Scot also missed Great Britain’s last tie in February, when Dan Evans guided the team to an exhilarating victory over Slovakia. Without him, James Ward, Dan Evans, Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchins will bid to reach the World Group play-offs on September 14-16 against a team ranked nine places above them in the Davis Cup rankings.

“After the last win against Slovakia the team were on a real high but we are now fully focussed on preparing for the tie against Belgium who we know will provide an altogether new challenge,” said Smith.

“It will be a real step-up against an opposition who is higher ranked than us, but if the team can put on some fine performances as they did against Slovakia, then we have a real chance of qualifying for the World Group Play-offs. We will give it absolutely everything and with the home crowd support behind us, we are very much looking forward to a hugely exciting tie.”

Murray had pulled out of the Slovakia tie in February due to injury concerns following the Australian Open, and though it is not known why he is absent from this encounter the tie falls the week after the Miami final and ahead of the European clay-court swing.
