Serena Williams Wimbledon 2019

Multiple Grand Slam winner worried about Serena Williams Wimbledon form, “She’s not really confident…”

Serena Williams is looking nervous and starting slowly which shouldn’t be happening, according to Eurosport’s tennis expert Mats Wilander

The 23 time Grand Slam winner has struggled with injury and form since having her first child but she’s looking fitter than in recent times says the 7 time Grand Slam winner Wilander.

Speaking on Eurosport Wilander said, “I think that Serena looks good and she has worked hard, she looks fitter than she did in Paris. To me, it’s the best she’s looked since she had her baby even though she made two finals last year. There is something fresher about her. But at the same time it does look like she gets nervous, she starts slowly – how does that happen after you’ve warmed up? That tells me she’s not really sure or confident with where she is with her tennis.”

Wimbledon 11th seed Serena Williams is through to the 4th round of the Ladies Singles today where she meets Spaniard Carla Suarez-Navarro after beating Julia Goerges, Kaj Juvan and Giulia Gatto-Monticone in her three previous rounds for the loss of 2 sets. But Wilander thinks that the deeper she goes in this tournament then the better she will get. “Serena has won Grand Slams in the past with little or no preparation when we’ve all thought she is no chance, but she gets so much better with each round. We saw that last year, got better and better and better with each round but then ran into Angie Kerber in the final and didn’t look good at all. I am a little concerned we’ll see that again.”

Serena Williams is looking for one more Grand Slam singles title to equal the record of 24 set by Margaret Court and most commentators expect her to achieve this. Williams is already the record holder for most Grand Slam singles title in the Open Era having overtaken Steffi Graf’s total of 22.

Today she is the first match on Court 1 in her 4th round against 30th seed Suarez Navarro. Williams has never lost to the Spaniard in their previous 6 meetings and in fact she hasn’t even lost a set, so she will be hot favourite going into this match even though the two players haven’t played since 2015.
