Another day, another big upset at the Rogers Cup. After the men’s event provided its fair share of thrills and spills in Toronto last week, the women’s event has produced more shocks than a dodgy plug socket.

No doubting the result of the day on Friday – Dominika Cubulkova claimed another prize scalp in the shape of Jelena Jankovic. Although the stars have aligned in the Serb’s bid to leapfrog compatriot Ana Ivanovic, she couldn’t make it happen against the Slovakian and went down 7-5 6-2.

Things couldn’t be going better for Dinara Safina – another player guilty of delaying J.J.‘s bid for the top. Having made the Russian Olympic squad, she beat her Beijing doubles partner Svetlana Kuznetsova 2-6 6-3 6-2 with a mature performance.

Marion Bartoli is thorugh to the semi-finals – but only she will know how. The Frenchwoman dragged herself through the match after suffering what looked to be a serious injury to beat Ai Sugiyama 6-2 6-3, and will face Cibulkova in the semis.

But Tamira Paszek’s Montreal magic is over. The Austrian looked exhausted following her win over world No.1 Ivanovic in the previous round, and was easy prey for Victoria Azarenka, who won 6-4 7-5 to face Safina in the second semi-final.
