Montanes, the world number 38, needed only 83 minutes to advance to the second round of the clay-court event as he aims for his second career title after earning his lone championship at Amersfoort in July.

Martin Vassallo Arguello of Argentina outlasted Spain’s Ivan Navarro 6-3 5-7 7-6 (7/3) to advance to the second round while his compatriot Juan Ignacio Chela forged a 2-6 6-3 6-2 win against qualifier Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay.

In other matches, Italian Potito Starace earned a 6-4 6-2 victory over Oscar Hernandez of Spain, Argentina’s Leonardo Mayer defeated countryman Diego Junqueira 7-6 (7/1) 6-3, and Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci rallied for a 3-6 6-4 6-4 win against France’s Nicolas Devilder.
