It was always going to be close in the battle between the top two seeds and so it proved as Kohlschreiber forced Monfils to drop his first set of the tournament.

However, in the end Monfils’ serve proved too strong as the Frenchman served up 14 aces.

The turning point in the match came when Monfils broke to take a 4-2 lead in the final set.

It brings an end to a finals hoodoo for the world number 13, who had lost his previous six and had not picked up a trophy since 2005.
