The loss of a whole day’s play in New York, announced at 11pm BST, meant the men’s quarter-final between third seed Rafael Nadal and 11th seed Fernando Gonzalez, which had started on Thursday night, will have to be completed on Saturday with Nadal a set up and 3-2 ahead in a second-set tie-break.

The scheduled women’s semi-finals, pitting defending champion Serena Williams against Kim Clijsters and ninth seed Caroline Wozniacki against Yanina Wickmayer, were postponed 45 minutes earlier.

All three matches, weather permitting, will be played on Saturday, the men’s semi-finals and women’s final on Sunday with the men’s final on Monday at 10pm BST.

The continuation of the Nadal-Gonzalez match has been slated for a 5pm BST start on Saturday, followed by the men’s doubles final and then the Wozniacki versus Wickmayer semi-final.

The much anticipated Clijsters-Williams semi has been held back for American prime-time television and will not start before 8:00pm on Saturday.

Sunday will see the men’s semi-finals played from 5:00pm BST with the women’s tentatively scheduled for 1:00am BST.

Juan Martin del Potro awaits the winner of Nadal-Gonzalez, while five-time defending champion Roger Federer will play fourth seed Novak Djokovic in the other semi-final.
