The second-seeded Melzer breezed past Portugal’s Frederico Gil 6-3 6-0 in the first game of the day.

However, his fellow seed, number eight Dudi Sela of Israel fell 7-5 6-1 to Julien Benneteau, and Croatian star Mario Ancic went out 6-4 6-3 at the hands of Spain’s Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo.

There were also wins for Diego Junqueira and Stefan Koubek in the other first-round ties.

In the only second-round match of the day, fifth seed Martin Vassallo Arguello fell to Spain’s Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 4-6 6-4 6-3.
