The third seed had no troubles breaking Kendrick’s serve in the opening set, but he found things more difficult as the American fought back to take a 5-2 lead.

But Melzer fought back from there, successfully saving a match point to book his place in the second round.

Elsewhere the only other seeded player on court, eighth seed Maximo Gonzalez, was defeated by Spaniard Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.

Gonzalez’ compatriot Leonardo Mayer of Argentina was also ousted from the competition, losing to Evgeny Korolev of Russia 7-6 (7/2) 2-6 7-5, while American Wayne Odesnik beat his countryman Kevin Anderson 7-6 (7/2) 6-4.
