Wozniak was bidding to become the first Canadian to reach the final in the 15-year history of this $175,000 event but it will be Mattek contesting her first WTA championship on Sunday when she faces top seed Nadia Petrova.

The 21-year-old has soared from 147th to 37th in the rankings over the course of this year and became the first Canadian in 20 years to win a WTA singles title with her triumph at Stanford in the summer.

Mattek, meanwhile, was already having the best season of her career prior to Saturday’s victory. Ranked 43rd, she cracked the top 50 for the first time this season and turned in impressive semi-final runs at Birmingham and Los Angeles.

Former world number three Petrova had little trouble in her semi-final match with the American lucky loser Angela Haynes, winning 6-1 6-3.

An eight-time winner on the tour, the 26-year-old Russian had a slow start the season, but won her only title of the year at Cincinnati in August and was a finalist at Stuttgart in mid-October.

The 189th-ranked Haynes was having the tournament of her life as she had never played in a quarter-final prior to this hardcourt event.

The 24-year-old made the main draw only after Italian Flavia Pennetta pulled out of the tournament because of personal reasons.
