Luke Johnson, the 17-year-old beneficiary of the financial reward, is one of many athletes across the country to benefit from the fund, which donates £5,000 per month to various individuals and teams.

“Tennis is my life; I go to college but devote all my spare time to training,” said Johnson.

“With this donation I will be able to improve the quality and quantity of my training programme and attend more tennis tournaments across the country.

“I hope this will help increase my British rating and World ranking.”

The MARS Refuel Drink Fund was set up three years ago to help athletes overcome financial barriers and to encourage them to participate in sport for longer.

Michelle Frost, the general manager for MARS consumer drinks said, “We’ve been overwhelmed by the response to the fund and have so far provided support to more than 15,000 people drawn from a huge variety of sports.

“From community schemes to Olympic hopefuls, charity runners to growing teams, we’re delighted to be able help so many people.”

The financial help is open to individuals as well as clubs and organisations based in the UK and Ireland and applicants must be 12 years or older.

The fund recently closed for the remainder of the year but check out the MARS Refuel website for information on how to apply for 2012.
