Lopez came from a set down against the home favourite and Argentinian number one to record a 4-6 7-6 (7/2) 7-6 (7/4) 6-3 win in three hours 19 minutes in Mar Del Plata.

“I started the first set very nervously,” he said. “But after the second I was more brave and I believed in myself. There are times when you feel bad, but luckily I could overcome that.”

He added: “Today was one of the best matches in my life. It’s the one which has made me the happiest in my whole career.”

David Nalbandian had earlier put hosts Argentina ahead with a far more more routine win over David Ferrer, brushing his opponent aside 6-3 6-2 6-3 in the opening rubber.

And Lopez conceded he had felt the pressure of having to stop Argentina taking a 2-0 lead.

He added: “Ferrer’s defeat put the pressure on me, and that’s why I was nervous in the first set. But after that I played an almost perfect match.”
