Robson, who stunned Li 12 months earlier in a run that took her to the fourth round, lost 6-2 7-5 as the Chinese proved too powerful for Robson to fight fire with fire.

The 19-year-old made 30 errors, most forced by the relentless pace and length on the ball from Li, and hit just seven winners in stark contrast to the assured performance she produced against Caroline Garcia in the previous round.

"I'm still very disappointed about today – I could have played a lot better,” admitted Robson. "Overall I would say it was an average week and I definitely was looking to do better."

Li will face former finalist Jelena Jankovic in the fourth round, while Robson is set for a spell on the sidelines to rest her injured wrist and have a wisdom tooth removed.

Sloane Stephens will face world No. 1 Serena Williams in the next round after crushing fellow American Jamie Hampton 6-1 6-3.

For Williams, who overpowerwe Yaroslava Shvedova 6-3 6-1, it will be the first meeting with Stephens since the 20-year-old went public on the breakdown of their friendship following Williams’ defeat at the Australian Open.

Stephens insists that the episode is behind them both: "We are competitors, we are co-workers so it is definitely tough, but I think now we are in a good place."

Agnieszka Radwanska needed nearly two hours to see off Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-4 7-6(1) to book her spot in the fourth round, but avoided a rematch of her Wimbledon semi-final defeat by Sabine Lisicki when the German was ousted by Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova 6-4 7-5.

Angelique Kerber motored through the first set en route to a 6-0 6-4 win over Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi.
