Kuznetsova won only 35% (seven of 20) of her service points, committed a pair of double faults and lost all but one of four break points in the second set but she rebounded in the third set, firing two aces while winning 77% (20 of 26) of her service points.
Katarina Srebotnik, who upset Kuznetsova at the US Open, and Nadia Petrova also advanced to the second round on Wednesday.
The unseeded Srebotnik of Slovenia defeated Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki 6-1 6-2, while the Russian Petrova also moved on in straight sets by eliminating France’s Aravane Rezai 7-5 6-2.
Srebotnik will next face Italian Francesca Schiavone, who upset seventh-seeded Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia in their first-round match on Tuesday.
Petrova faces a much tougher opponent in the second round as she will take on number two seed Ana Ivanovic. The Serbian Ivanovic, the world’s third-ranked player, reached the final of this tournament last year before losing in straight sets to Martina Hingis.
Frenchwoman Virginie Razzano also advanced on Wednesday, posting a 6-3 6-2 victory over Ai Sugiyama of Japan. Razzano is through to the second round for the first time in three tournaments as she was ousted in her opening match at New Haven and the US Open.
