The Russian suffered the injury during her first-round win over Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi on Tuesday, forcing her to pull out of her quarter-final meeting with Ai Sugiyama the following day.
There are now real concerns over whether the former US Open champion will be fit for the start of the Australian Open next week.
“For the moment the physio’s telling me to rest two days (and) not to do anything,” she said.
She continued: “I felt it a little bit before but I thought, well, it’s just tight muscle.
“Now every time I start to pull it feels worse and worse. Yesterday I could manage to finish and win the match (but) I went to warm-up today and it was worse.
“I will have a MRI (scan) to figure out what I have there and see how it can be managed to cure this problem to be better for Melbourne.
“I know what it is and I cannot let myself injure it even worse.
“I have to be careful, especially with a Grand Slam next week.
“I need to see two, three days how it’s recovering.”
