Knowles, from the Bahamas, and German Groenefeld beat the top seeds Leander Paes and Cara Black in straight sets, 7-5 6-3.

Coming on after the men’s singles final on Centre Court, Knowles and Groenefeld broke serve three times in the opening set and the ninth seeds needed just one break in the second set, and Knowles sent down an unreturnable serve to clinch victory.

With the win, Knowles ended a long wait for a Wimbledon title.

The 37-year-old had never previously won a grand slam mixed doubles title in 50 previous attempts, however he had claimed men’s doubles victories at the Australian Open, French Open and US Open.

For Groenefeld the triumph was her first at a grand slam.

Their opponents, Indian Paes and Zimbabwean Black, had been looking to add to the US Open title they won last year. Paes was seeking his 10th grand slam title.
