The world number 31 was far more potent on her serve than Molik, formerly a top-10 player before being struck down by illness and injury, and she wrapped up the match in an hour and five minutes.

However, fifth seed Melinda Czink crashed out to Yan Zi on a final-set tie-break despite having won the opening set 6-3.

Her Chinese opponent took the second 7-5 before prevailing 7-6 (7/5) in the decider in a match that lasted 12 minutes shy of three hours.

Eighth seed Olga Govortsova suffered the same fate, going out to Anastasia Rodionova in a see-saw match.

Rodionova won the first set 6-4 before Govortsova, the world number 51, hit back to win the second 6-0.

Rodionova, of Australia, then defied a rankings gap of 46 to win the decider 7-5 in a match lasting two and a quarter hours.

Bojana Jovanovski beat Vitalia Diatchenko 6-3 6-1, Galina Voskoboeva produced five aces and saw her opponent serve four double faults but she could not take advantage as she went down 7-5 6-4 to Ayumi Morita.
