The home-favourite, who has endured two wrist operations within the past 12 months, edged a tense first set shootout before securing a solitary break in the ninth game of the second set to secure an emotional win.

It’s a third title for Keys, her first triumph since Birmingham last summer, and she was thrilled to enjoy such a productive week in California. “I know it hasn’t been an easy few months,” said the 21-year-old, who was resolute behind her trusty serve.

“I know this means a lot to me and it also means a lot to you guys [her support team], so thank you for everything.”

At the Citi Open in Washington, D.C., Ekaterina Makarova recovered from a set down to outlast Julia Goerges 3-6 7-6(2) 6-0 and capture silverware for a third time.

The Russian had an arduous path to the title but she thoroughly merited he success in the American capital. “This is a great tournament,” said the No.7 seed.

“I’ve always loved coming back here and it’s the fifth time I’ve been here. I have such great memories from when I was a kid about the Washington event so every time I came back, I dreamt about winning this tournament. I’m so happy about this.”
